About the bullroarer

A bullroarer is one of the oldest sound-makers there is: a flat blade on a cord that roars as it spins through the air. The designer modelled this one on a wooden bullroarer and tried it at several sizes; all worked, and the sound changes with the scale.

Using it is simple. Tie on a string (about 70 cm is recommended) with a knot at your end for grip. Let it hang, make sure the string is twisted so the blade rotates (it won't sound otherwise), then swing it round at varying speeds. Give yourself space, because it's easy to hit something.
